Zakat Al‑Fitr ensures that every family has food on the table and can celebrate Eid with joy. It should be given by every self-supporting adult Muslim who has food in excess of their needs, on behalf of themselves and their dependents.

What is Zakat Al-Fitr?
Zakat Al‑Fitr is a compulsory form of Sadaqah that every Muslim must give before Eid Al‑Fitr. It is required from all Muslims, regardless of age or gender, as long as they have the means to do so.
When should Zakat Al-Fitr be paid?
Zakat Al‑Fitr should be paid in Ramadan, before Eid arrives. Giving early helps ensure that distributions are organized in time for families to receive support by Eid Al‑Fitr.
Why is Zakat Al-Fitr $15 per person?
The amount of food one must distribute as Zakat Al-Fitr is on saa’ of food. This is a unit of measurement used in the time of the Prophet ﷺ. It equates to an amount of food that can be scooped up with two hands put together, four times. Therefore, when we represent this amount of food in dollars, it roughly equates to $15 CAD. Paying this amount in cash for the purpose of fulfilling one’s obligation of Zakat Al-Fitr is sufficient, insha'Allah.
Who pays Zakat Al-Fitr?
Most scholars hold that if a person has enough to cover their family’s needs for the day and night of Eid, they must give Zakat Al‑Fitr. This obligation applies to every Muslim, regardless of age, gender, or financial status, as long as they have even a small surplus.
Because the Nisab does not apply to Zakat Al‑Fitr, some people may give it even while being eligible to receive it. This allows those facing hardship to still take part in helping others, strengthening dignity and community pride.
Who receives Zakat Al-Fitr?
The recipients of Zakat Al‑Fitr are the poor and the needy (Fuqara and Masakeen), defined in the same way as for Zakat Al‑Maal. These are individuals whose income does not sufficiently cover their own needs and the needs of their families. In essence, anyone eligible to receive Zakat Al‑Maal is also eligible to receive Zakat Al‑Fitr.
